The Rise of Copyright Trolls
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

Professor Sag will discuss the astonishing rate of growth of Copyright John Doe lawsuits over the past six years, which have accounted for every second copyright case filed in the U.S. from 2014 to 2016. John Doe cases are filed with the aim of turning a profit in the courthouse as opposed to seeking compensation or deterring illegal activity. They reflect a systematic opportunism that fits squarely within the concept of litigation trolling. Professor Sag will explore the features of copyright doctrine that have facilitated the recent explosion in trolling litigation and provide practical tips for defeating the trolls.
