Mentor program now accepting applications

The ISBA Young Lawyers Division officially launched the ISBA Mentor Program earlier this week and is accepting applications from ISBA members to serve as mentors or mentees for the 2015-2016 mentor year.

Applications will be accepted through Feb. 15. Mentors and mentees will be matched with the year-long program set to begin March 15. Download the mentor or mentee applications.

Once accepted into the program as a mentor or mentee, attorneys will receive additional materials regarding the program which includes a mentor guide, information on mentor training, and a mentor/mentee match. The program commitments are minimal: six hours of contact over the year between mentor and mentee (ideally in-person) with no formal curriculum, although a suggested list of topics and issues is provided.

Who can apply? ISBA members who have been licensed for fewer than five years in the state of Iowa are eligible to be a mentee. To serve as a mentor, attorneys must have been licensed for five years or more in Iowa, have a clean disciplinary record, and carry malpractice insurance (if required). The YLD Mentoring Committee anticipates a high number of mentee applications, and are asking those who are eligible to serve as a mentor to consider joining the program.

More information about the program is available in the December Iowa Lawyer magazine (Pages 8-11). For questions regarding the mentoring program, contact the YLD Mentoring Committee at mentorprogram@iowabar.org.

A Letter from the President

Mandatory assessment for Iowa Legal Aid? Two perspectives.

There has been a lot of discussion in the last year or two about the reduced funding sources for Iowa Legal Aid. The ISBA supports a new Pro Hac Vice fee of $250 per case and a stronger lobbying effort both here in Iowa and in Washington, D.C., to raise more funds to provide civil legal services for low-income Iowans. Some say that these efforts are inadequate and that Iowa should now join the ranks of those few state licensing boards that have adopted mandatory assessments requiring most licensed lawyers and judges to pay into a fund to support these legal services.

At the request of Iowa Legal Aid, a proposal is pending before the Iowa Supreme Court that would require a mandatory assessment of $100 per attorney per year. As your president, my duty is to ensure you receive this information so you have the opportunity to file your comments with the court.

2015 election season not quite over…

Over the next few months, the Iowa judicial branch will conduct two elections: Election of attorney members in Iowa congressional districts one and three to serve on the State Judicial Nominating Commission and county magistrate appointing commissions.

Due to statutory requirements, these two elections cannot be held simultaneously. Voters will elect county magistrate commission members in December. The voting for attorney members of the State Judicial Nominating Commission from congressional districts one and three will then take place in January.

To avoid confusion over these elections, State Court Administrator David Boyd encourages voters to read the full announcement here. For questions about the election, email David.K.Boyd@iowacourts.gov or call 515-281-5241.
